Good Friday Part III: The Finish

Good Friday

Isaiah 52:13-53:12; Psalm 22; Hebrews 10:16-23; John 18:1-19:42

Preached by The Rev. Jonathan Turtle on 14 April, 2017

“When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” (John 19:30) As he hung there on the cross, that torturous Roman instrument of death, the weight of his body bearing down on those nails that pierced his hands and feet, beaten and bloodied, he inhaled and with his final breath said, “It is finished.” I tell you, this small phrase is so vast and so deep that its treasures will never be exhausted. More was said in this one breath than … [Read more...]

The End of Hope

The Fifth Sunday of Lent

Ezekiel 37:1-14; Psalm 130; Romans 8:6-11; John 11:1-45

Preached by The Rev. Jonathan Turtle on 3 April, 2017

“Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice!” Psalm 130:1 I’ve titled this sermon The End of Hope. On the one hand we might think of a sense of hopelessness. The end of hope as in, my hope has run out. But the word “end” has another meaning, as in “goal.” What is the end or the goal of Christian hope? All of our readings this morning bring us into contact with both of these meanings. For example, we know of no other life than one marked by pain and suffering. We are born, we … [Read more...]

Joseph, a righteous man was he.

The Fourth Sunday of Advent, Year A

Matthew 1:18-25

Preached by The Rev. Jonathan Turtle on 18 December, 2016

Mary tends to get a lot of the spotlight in and around Christmas time and rightly so. She is, of course, the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. It was according to the flesh of Mary that the Son of God came among us and became the Son of Man. However, in Matthew’s account of the gospel, which we have just now heard, a different figure comes to the fore—Joseph. Joseph we do not know much about, the better part of his life buried somewhere in the pages of history. But here in … [Read more...]

St. Mary and St. Martha

The Anglican Church of St. Mary and St. Martha is a joyful, growing, and diverse community of faith where we together are learning what it means to follow Jesus in the west end of Toronto.

We build on the history and deep roots of four previous Anglican churches in the area: St. John, Weston; The Church of the Good Shepherd, Mt Dennis; St. David Lawrence Av; and The Church of the Advent.

We are truly seeing God doing something new - in our lives, our families, our church and our neighbourhood and we invite you to take part in this too.
