Jesus does his best work with our poverty.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Pentecost (B)

Ruth 3:1-5, 4:13-17; Psalm 127; Hebrews 9:24-28; Mark 12:38-44

Preached by Molly Finlay on 8 November, 2015

After a very long election campaign, we now have a brand new Prime Minister who was sworn in this week amongst great pomp and ceremony.  But behind the glitz and glamour of our dashing new PM, we know there are real issues that surfaced for us as Canadians during all the campaigning.  Affordable housing, food prices, refugees.  These are troubling matters that affect far too many of us. Here in our own neighbourhoods, the North York Food Bank served 180 thousand families just last year.  Our … [Read more...]

A Sermon on the Saints of the Old Testament

Feast Day for the Saints of the Old Testament (B)

Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-12, 23-28, 32-12:2; Psalm 37:28-36; Matthew 22:23-32

Preached by The Rev. Jonathan Turtle on 4 November, 2015

Have you not read what was said to you by God, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? He is God not of the dead, but of the living. At this time of year, as you well know, the Church celebrates the feast of All Saints and gathers up thanksgiving for the whole company of those who, in various and different ways, bore witness to Christ. Today we extend our thanksgiving and include the saints of the Old Testament in our celebration of faith. The New Testament teaches … [Read more...]

All Saints' Day (B)

Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-9; Psalm 24; Revelation 21:1-6a; John 11:32-44

Preached by The Rev. Jonathan Turtle on 1 November, 2015

Sermon in a tweet: Saints are those who, like Lazarus, have been summoned out of death into life and sent out. “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” Lazarus is dead. His sister Martha is distraught, knowing that if only Jesus had of been there this whole situation could have been different. Then, at the climax of the story, Jesus stands at the mouth of the … [Read more...]

St. Mary and St. Martha

The Anglican Church of St. Mary and St. Martha is a joyful, growing, and diverse community of faith where we together are learning what it means to follow Jesus in the west end of Toronto.

We build on the history and deep roots of four previous Anglican churches in the area: St. John, Weston; The Church of the Good Shepherd, Mt Dennis; St. David Lawrence Av; and The Church of the Advent.

We are truly seeing God doing something new - in our lives, our families, our church and our neighbourhood and we invite you to take part in this too.
